WESTPORT — Police issued a warning Friday about scam callers falsely telling Westporters they had failed to respond to a subpoena to appear in court.
The calls were reported to the Police Department after the agency’s non-emergency phone number was shown as the scammers’ originating number, according to the report.
The scam targets were told the calls were being recorded, with the apparent intention of bilking money from victims hoping to avoid “arrest” and seeking payment of a “fine” for the purported subpoena violation.
In the alert, officials said the Police Department does not accept payment over the phone for any fines, services or fees. Anyone who receives a similar call or suspicious phone messages is advised to hang up and report the incident to the Police Department via its non-emergency number — 203-341-6000.
