WESTPORT — A Fairfield man is accused of issuing a nearly $13,000 “bad check” to a local business, police said.

Alex Mejia, 38, was arrested June 19 on the charge of issuing a bad check, according to the report.

Police said they began investigating a complaint filed May 24 by a local business that a $12,945.50 check written by Mejia had been returned for “insufficient funds,” police said.

After a warrant was completed and signed by a Superior Court judge for Mejia’s arrest, police said several attempts to have Mejia turn himself in were made unsuccessfully.

Consequently, Mejia was taken into custody during a June 19 traffic stop by Fairfield police and turned over the Westport police, according to the report.

After being formally charged, Mejia was released after posting $25,000 and is scheduled to arraigned June 29 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
