SUMMARY:Exploring the Derek Piotr Fieldwork Archive
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating lecture with folklorist and researcher Derek Piotr\, founder of The Derek Piotr Fieldwork Archive.\n\n\nThe Derek Piotr Fieldwork Archive was established by Derek Piotr in August 2022. The Archive contains over 1\,500 audio recordings made from March 2020 onward\, and preserves diverse representations of folklife; ballads\, hymns\, tales\, poems\, children’s songs\, and interviews among them. The focus of this collection is on the “non-singer”: someone with no background in musical performance who can nevertheless relate a song or folkloric memory. In this lecture\, Derek will walk you through the process of journeying everywhere from Iceland to Appalachia to record these songs from non-musicians\, as well as the organization and development of the Archive as a web-based repository.\n\n\nPlease register.

SUMMARY:1776 at 250: Celebrating America's History with Song & Story
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging lecture hosted by Professor Gil Harel\, exploring the iconic musical 1776 in the context of America’s 250th birthday in 2026. This talk will delve into how the musical\, first performed in 1969\, vividly portrays the struggles and compromises surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, capturing the revolutionary spirit of the nation’s founding. As we approach the semiquincentennial\, Professor Harel will discuss how 1776 not only celebrates America’s birth but also confronts its complexities\, such as the debate over slavery\, as seen in powerful songs like “Molasses to Rum.”

SUMMARY:For the Love of the Game: Baseball panel at Fairfield Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Town Librarian Scott Jarzombek (a die-hard Mets fan\, himself) moderates a discussion of everything baseball with two dedicated fans\, former Little League coach Matt McGuire and MLB.com reporter Michael Clair.\n\n\nMatt\, whose four sons kept him involved in Fairfield Little League for 15 years as a coach\, commissioner\, board member and president\, is the author of Fairfield American: a Legacy of Little League Dreams (2025). A friend called the book “a love letter to Little League baseball\,” and Matt couldn’t agree more\, citing his experiences with his boys in the ballpark as some of the greatest moments in his life.\n\n\nIn addition to reporting on international baseball and the World Baseball Classic for MLB.com\, Michael Clair has written We Sacrifice Everything to Baseball: How the Czech Republic’s Amateur Underdogs Became World Baseball Classic Heroes (2026). The book tells the story of how the Czech Republic’s team of amateur players–firefighters\, teachers\, and even field caretakers by day–upset both Spain and then China to win the 2023 World Baseball Classic through teamwork\, sacrifice\, and self-belief.\n\n\nCome share an evening of discussion about America’s most beloved pastime\, focusing on the pure love of the game.\n\n \n\n\nCopies of both books will be available for purchase. Advance registration is appreciated.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Brigitte Dale
