WESTPORT — Support for reproductive rights is being mobilized with a Westport demonstration planned Oct. 2 by the Women’s March on the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge.

The local event, part of a national effort, is being organized in response to the Texas law limiting access to abortions, recently upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, according to a statement from the Women’s March.

The gathering will start at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, on the downtown span carrying Route 1 over the Saugatuck River.

Also on the agenda is opposition to reproductive-rights legislation approved in Mississippi, which is scheduled to be reviewed by the Supreme Court in its term starting in October. The national campaign is also supported by Planned Parenthood, the Working Families Party, the Frontline, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, Access Reproductive Care-Southeast and others.

People planning to attend the local demonstration are asked to bring signs and posters “defending reproductive rights,” according to Women’s March organizers. They also are asked to wear masks, per pandemic-safety guidance.
