The film captures the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival\, documented in vibrant color and high-fashion style. Rather than a standard concert film\, it unfolds as a visual poem that interweaves legendary musical performances with scenes of the coastal crowds and the America’s Cup yacht races. This landmark documentary serves as a cinematic extension of our current exhibition\, Art\, Jazz + the Blues\, bringing the same energy and rhythm found in our galleries to the screen. \nThe screening will be followed by a Q&A with Brian Kane\, a scholar of music theory and philosophy who specializes in the intersection of sound\, improvisation\, and 20th-century jazz. Kane brings a unique perspective to the film’s legacy\, exploring how these legendary performances continue to resonate within the history of American art. Brian Kane is Professor of Music and Film and Media Studies at Yale University. He earned his PhD from UC Berkeley and was a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia University before joining Yale University. He teaches and writes about jazz\, sound\, media\, and technology—and how the ways we listen influence how we understand the world. He is the author of two books published by Oxford University Press: Sound Unseen: Acousmatic Sound in Theory and Practice (2014) and Hearing Double: Jazz\, Ontology\, Auditory Culture (2024). Kane leads Yale’s Sound Studies Working Group and is a founding editor of nonsite.org\, an online journal of arts and ideas. \nAs you watch the film\, you will recognize the very figures who served as direct muses for several artists in our exhibition. The film features Louis Armstrong\, a vital inspiration for Richard Hunt\, Faith Ringgold\, and Tracy Sugarman\, alongside Thelonious Monk\, whose improvisational genius influenced Sam Gilliam and is captured in John H. Nichols’ Pianorama in our larger gallery space. Additionally\, the appearance of Mahalia Jackson highlights her profound impact on the work of Romare Bearden. Three outstanding New York City musicians will serve up the vocal delicacies; Melanie Spector\, soprano\, Joseph Sacchi\, tenor and LeAnn Overton\, pianist and musical director.\nMs. Overton serves on the staff of the Metropolitan Opera\, where she is responsible for the “Met Titles”\, and on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music and Montclair State University. She has been active as in a number of summer music programs in Italy\, and presides over Respiro Opera\, a similar program in NYC.\nPrize-winning soprano Melanie Spector is a native of NYC\, and has been heard around the country\, performing with the Detroit Opera\, Opera Eugene\, Opera Tampa and at the Apen Music Festival. She is also a frequent panelist on the Metropolitan Opera Quiz feature\, broadcast internationally.\nTenor Joseph Sacchi has a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and is winning accolades as a young dramatic tenor. DESCRIPTION:Town Librarian Scott Jarzombek (a die-hard Mets fan\, himself) moderates a discussion of everything baseball with two dedicated fans\, former Little League coach Matt McGuire and MLB.com reporter Michael Clair. \nMatt\, whose four sons kept him involved in Fairfield Little League for 15 years as a coach\, commissioner\, board member and president\, is the author of Fairfield American: a Legacy of Little League Dreams (2025).  A friend called the book “a love letter to Little League baseball\,” and Matt couldn’t agree more\, citing his experiences with his boys in the ballpark as some of the greatest moments in his life. \nIn addition to reporting on international baseball and the World Baseball Classic for MLB.com\, Michael Clair has written We Sacrifice Everything to Baseball:  How the Czech Republic’s Amateur Underdogs Became World Baseball Classic Heroes (2026). The women confront changes in marriage\, career\, health\, and identity while examining what has sustained their friendships over decades. Humor carries the evening\, but beneath the laughter lies a current of recognition and tenderness. The story gives space to regret\, loyalty\, and second chances\, revealing the warmth and resilience that shape enduring friendships. A recent review noted\, “Birthday Club is more than a play\, it’s a party\, and everyone is invited to join the fun.” \nThe production is presented by UU Players\, a theater troupe founded in 2008 by Director Emeritus Jim Luongo. The group’s mission is to perform great plays for fun and community enjoyment. The story gives space to regret\, loyalty\, and second chances\, revealing the warmth and resilience that shape enduring friendships. DESCRIPTION:Double the Cookies\, Double the Fun! One ticket gets you two gingerbread cookies to decorate and enjoy. Bring your favorite cookie buddy—or keep both for yourself!  \nWe’ll provide everything you need: cookies\, colorful icing\, and plenty of candy for decorating. Our friendly staff will be on hand with tips and inspiration to help you create a sweet masterpiece.  \nPerfect for kids and parents\, couples\, or friends looking for a cheerful holiday activity\, this event guarantees festive fun and a tasty keepsake to take home. Don’t wait—tickets are limited\, and the cookies are calling!  \nTickets are $15 per pair\, $10 for members and includes all materials. Reservations may be made at 1 pm or 2:30 pm; each workshop lasts for approximately 60 minutes. Workshops are limited to 6 pairs during each time slot\, save your spot in the form below before we sell out!   \nTo support the museum and take advantage of membership discounts\, please join today! Tickets are nonrefundable. In the event you must cancel\, we will consider your purchase a donation and will happily issue you a donation receipt.  \nWestport Museum is accessible via public transit! The Westport-Saugatuck railroad station has connections on the MTA New Haven line from Norwalk\, Bridgeport\, Stratford\, Milford\, and New Haven\, and more. Uber 2.3 miles to the Museum or take the Norwalk Wheels bus transit system when available to Post Road West at Myrtle Avenue\, which is a brief 7-minute walk from the Museum!

Come hear all your favorites of the season\, from classical hits like Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker and Handel’s Messiah Chorus to popular gems like Sleigh Ride and Jingle Bells\, and everything in between! In this joyful extravaganza there will be choruses\, dancers\, exciting vocal soloists and a special surprise guest who happens to wear red and have a white beard… It all ends with a big sing-along for the entire audience of the most famous holiday carols.\nBring the whole family for all the festivities! \nCome early to hear students from the Suzuki Cello School performing in the lobby from 2:15-2:45pm. \nPlease bring a non-perishable food item to donate to The Pantry at\nCt.
