SUMMARY:Opening Reception of "Making his Mark in Connecticut: The Creative Process of F. Luis Mora"
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the opening reception of “Making his Mark in Connecticut: The Creative Process of F. Luis Mora.” To commemorate the U.S. Semiquincentennial\, the HMA presents this exhibition\, which explores the themes of the America 250 | CT Commission through the lens of an Uruguayan-born artist who settled in Gaylordsville\, CT. Featuring never-before-seen preparatory drawings alongside finished paintings\, this exhibition tells the origin story of the first Hispanic member of the National Academy of Design and his legacy in his adopted state. \nThis exhibition is curated by Dr. Cynthia Roznoy with key loans from the collection of Benjamin Ortiz and Victor P. Torchia\, Jr. and George Wall. The exhibition also includes loans from major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Yale University Art Gallery\, the Mattatuck Museum\, the Florence Griswold Museum\, the Georgia Museum of Art\, and the Rockwell Museum. \nFree and open to the public; light refreshments served.\nThis project is supported by funding through CT Humanities\, the Wyeth Foundation for American Art\, and America 250 | CT. Special thanks to lead donor\, Elizabeth Fray.

SUMMARY:Encaustic and Collage with Leslie Giuliani
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, we’ll explore the ancient yet contemporary medium of Encaustic—beeswax-based paint that also serves as a versatile adhesive—to create unique collages. This technique is wonderfully flexible: if you’re not happy with an arrangement\, simply re-melt and re-position. Participants will learn how to build richly layered artworks using Encaustic as “glue\,” incorporating fabric\, stencils\, prints\, personal drawings\, even Spirograph designs! We’ll also experiment with laser copy transfers and direct drawing. No prior experience is necessary\, and all materials are included. \nLeslie Giuliani is an American contemporary artist whose work merges textiles\, encaustic\, oil painting\, and printmaking. Born in Philadelphia\, PA\, she earned her BFA from the University of Delaware and continued her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Her artwork is held in the collections of the Housatonic Museum of Art\, the State of Connecticut\, and numerous private collections. Giuliani has been awarded an Artist Fellowship Grant from the State of Connecticut for Craft as well as a residency fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center. She lives and works in Weston\, CT.
